releasing Music for Funerals
You might remember that a couple years ago we went on tour through Tajikistan with the U.S. State Department, then performed our cabaret at the Edinburgh Fringe and in NYC at 54 Below. It was a super productive time and afterward we needed to spend some quality time lying on our couch, watching Bake Off ( 💀♥️Noel4eva♥️💀) and mainlining snacks.
We thought we’d take a short break and then head into the studio to record an album of our new songs. But life had other plans - really boring plans. We hit middle age hard and it hit back harder. It slapped us with complicated health issues (we’re doing better now - thanks for asking!), relationship struggles, a renovation to our crumbling 1870’s bungalow, a fertility fiasco and the passing of our beloved dogchild, Moose Dodd Badger. We were shocked to realize that we were in midlife and had to deal with these sucky midlife problems.
At the peak of our existential crisis, we decided to pause work on our new songs in favor of upgrading our first two albums (WE DON’T LIVE THERE and THE FAILURE CABARET) with re-recorded vocals and additional instrumentals, so our families would have something nice to play at our funerals should we suddenly drop dead. While we loved the production and studio musicians on those albums, we knew we could sing them better. We didn’t want to someday find ourselves in the afterlife being eternally punished for our poor breath support.
The process took about 8-months and most of our band’s savings, but we did it! Both albums will be released on all streaming platforms on Friday, July 25th. These updated albums are a record of how we spent our time between ages 35 and 45, kind of like a scrapbook or a souvenir from a trip that was a little overpriced. We look forward to playing them for our caregivers in the rest home someday.
We also made a music video for our song KETAMINE HAPPY HOUR with direction/videography by Aaron Hartshorn, choreography by Lisa Natoli, production assistance by Taylor Slonaker and editing/animation by our very own Justin! We’re so tickled by how it turned out. Can’t wait for you to see it! You can watch it on YouTube on Friday, July 25th.
We’re playing shows around the Berkshires and Hudson Valley in August to celebrate (check out our “shows” page for details). If you live in the area, we hope to see you! If you don’t live in the area, please drop us a note and let us know how you are.
